Yatate, Japanese antique wooden carved writing set , late
Edo era
YATATE iis a small portable brush case for writing.
It constitutes of a carrying box for ink stones (sumi-ire)
and a shaft (long container) for a brush (and possibly small
knife which was for more than just opening letters). Yatate
were simply put in the belt like a fan with traditional
Japanese man's kimono.
This is late Edo period wooden carved excellent YATATE
made in shape of Japanese imperial palace's carriage. Signed
by artist Nissho on carriage's base.
