Japanese Vintage Kimono - Wedding Kimono and Wedding Gown

Japanese Uchikake is an ornate wedding coat
with a long trail and padded hem, which Japanese bride
wear during the her wedding ceremony.
It is worn like a robe without obi over another
kimono, called 'kakeshita', which is tied with obi.
Originally worn as a reception and going-out wear by
the wives of highest ranking samurai, it has developed
into one of the most elaborately decorated kimono worn
by all Japanese brides today. However, only those brides
from very wealthy families were able to wear their gowns
due to the extremeley high cost.
The white colors of uchikake is said to convey a
bride's rediness to adapt into a new family. White on
white gowns were worn on the first day of a three-day
long wedding ceremony in the Edo Period and the red gown
was worn on the second day. The red was a shield against
many misfortunes of a marriage.
Uchikake is made of silk and is embellished with
fine embroidery and brocade. The bottom of Uchikake is
padded to trail along the floor.
Due to its magnificent beauty given by the elaborate
work of embroidering, brocade or hand paintings, it make
a perfect display and its will give you many hours of
pleasure to look at.
